Beyond the role

Life in New Delhi

New Delhi is one of the world's great megacities — the political, cultural, and diplomatic heart of India, teeming with history, complexity, and energy. Few cities on earth match its density of monuments, markets, and neighbourhoods, from the Mughal grandeur of Old Delhi to the leafy avenues of Lutyens' diplomatic quarter. The expat community is large and well-established, with international schools, quality private hospitals, and a rich social infrastructure that eases the transition for newcomers. Food is exceptional and absurdly affordable; weekend escapes to the Himalayas, Rajasthan, or the beaches of Goa are within easy reach. That said, New Delhi asks something real of those who come: air quality ranks among the worst of any major city, summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C before the monsoon breaks, and the sheer sensory scale of a 30-million-person metropolis is an adjustment by any measure. Those who thrive here tend to be adaptable, curious people who find the chaos energising rather than depleting — and who discover, often to their surprise, that the city gets under their skin in the best possible way.
