Beyond the role

Life in Dubai

Dubai is one of the world's most extraordinary cities — a place that has transformed from a small fishing port into a global metropolis of over three million people in barely half a century, and that continues to reinvent itself at a pace that still catches long-term residents off guard. It is gleaming, ambitious, and relentlessly international: nearly 90% of the population are expatriates, which means living here feels less like moving abroad and more like joining the world's most diverse transient community. The infrastructure is exceptional — modern roads, a clean and efficient metro, world-class hospitals, and international schools that range from British to American to IB. The food scene is extraordinary, shopping is a local sport, and the desert and Gulf coast offer a natural backdrop that surprises most newcomers with its beauty. The climate is the most significant adjustment: summers from June through September are brutally hot, regularly exceeding 45°C, and outdoor life essentially retreats indoors during those months. The rest of the year, however, is warm, sunny, and genuinely pleasant. Tax-free salaries and a relatively low income tax burden make the financial picture attractive, though housing costs and international school fees can be significant. The UAE has become more open and cosmopolitan in recent years, and for a Christian worker the context is stable and church ministry is permitted — Fellowship itself is a testament to the scale of what is possible. For someone energised by multicultural ministry at genuine global scale, Dubai is arguably one of the most strategic cities on earth.
